Who we are

DIANA is a student association at the University of Castilla-La Mancha that builds its own fixed-wing drones, from design to flight, to compete at national and international level. It was founded in 2022 by Pablo Zamorano Fernández, an aerospace engineering student in Toledo. It is registered in the General Register of Associations of Castilla-La Mancha and with the university itself.

The name stands for Development and Investigation in Aerospace and Navigation Areas, but above all it pays tribute to Diana Trujillo, the NASA aerospace engineer who worked on the Mars Science Laboratory and Perseverance missions.

We work at the School of Industrial and Aerospace Engineering of Toledo. Whoever joins sees what is taught in class at work: in electronics, aerodynamics or flight mechanics, there is a long way between paper and an aircraft that flies, made with your own hands.

Where we are heading

Having reached the goal of competing in the Air Cargo Challenge, the team is considering its own R&D department and new lines in rocketry and FPV drones.

Designs the outer shape of the aircraft and simulates it before anyone cuts a single part.

It is the only department that works almost entirely away from the workshop. From the start of the year it studies aerofoils and geometries: a custom or standard aerofoil, elliptical wing, sweep, dihedral. Once there is a main idea, it designs several versions of the outer geometry with XFOIL and XFLR5, and refines them with simulations in MATLAB and CFD.

Structures and manufacturing

Turns the design into parts that fly, and checks that they hold without excess material.

Once Aerodynamics has its first versions, this department designs the internal structure and the joints and gives the aircraft its physical form, with composites or with traditional techniques such as balsa wood. It also looks for more efficient manufacturing methods that fit the rules of each competition. In parallel, the structures side simulates the critical parts in Abaqus, such as the landing gear, the wings or the fuselage, to check that they withstand their loads without oversizing the aircraft.

Chooses the motor, propeller and battery, and builds the lightest control system that responds well.

The goal is the best control response with the lightest and most efficient system possible. The radio can always be improved: from a standard receiver to ExpressLRS, and from there to an in-house one whose code is still being polished. In propulsion, the work is finding the best balance between motor, propeller, battery and speed controller, with an in-house test bench and in contact with Aerodynamics, which receives the thrust and efficiency data for the design.

Raises the money and resources for the aircraft to exist, and tells the story of what the team does.

It keeps the project afloat. It runs social media, video and photography, and above all it raises the money the project needs: through events, raffles, merchandise and sponsors.

The pilot

The pilot is not a department but a role that cuts across several. The lead pilot belongs to Aerodynamics, and the reserve pilot, when there is one, to Electronics. There is currently no reserve: the aim is to have no more than two.

Anyone who wants to fly has an interview with the lead pilot. Training starts with the basics and continues on a computer simulator. Once the level is there, real flying begins: first with a trainer glider and then with the aircraft of the team.
